Poppy Holden
Vocal ensemblesPoppy Holden studied singing at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide, and at the Royal College of Music, London; with Nadia Boulanger, Paris; as a Fromm Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center, USA; and as a postgraduate at York and Newcastle Universities, having graduated from the Open University.
As a soloist she premièred Oliver Knussen’s Second Symphony at the Windsor Festival and at Tanglewood; Knussen’s Pooh Songs at the South Bank; and Bruno Maderna’s Satyricon with the Nederlands Opera.
She has sung with many fine vocal ensembles including the Consort of Musicke, Gothic Voices, the Tallis Scholars, Musica Reservata, the Taverner Consort and the English Concert.
Poppy was Head of Vocal Studies at Newcastle University from 2007-2013 and since 2015 she has been teaching singers at Durham University. She also coaches members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus. She first gave workshops for the Czech Music Society in Prague 1991, and since then she has taught regularly at the ISSEM in Valtice.
During the academic year, Poppy has a thriving singers’ studio in Newcastle.

About The Class
Improve the beauty, flexibility, range and strength of your voice, and learn how to blend healthily in an ensemble.
In this class at Valtice, each student can receive a 20-minute masterclass every day. We will decide, when we first meet on Sunday, how the various ensembles can be arranged, what repertoire would be the most suitable and how many lessons you will have together and – in case of interest – separately. You are not obliged to be there all the time if you have other classes, choir, etc. to attend.
Pre-arranged ensembles will be given priority however we can arrange ensembles on the spot as well.
Suggested Repertoire
We will work mostly on English and Italian renaissance madrigals. You are welcome to bring your own repertoire, especially this year jubilee, G. P. Palestrina.
