ISSEM 2026 | Baroque orchestra

In previous years, for various reasons, we were unable on several occasions to rehearse the remarkable Sonata A5 by G. Valentini, a work the composer deliberately wrote in an unusually “chaotic” style. Since the theme of this year’s Valtice Summer School is “Chaos and Order,” we will therefore (after about ten years) perform, alongside this piece, the opening *Chaos* from Jean-Féry Rebel’s symphonic suite of 1737, which will undoubtedly become the “signature tune” of the final performance.

A particular challenge will be the psychologically chaotic *Hypocondrie* by J.D. Zelenka. We will also include in the orchestra’s repertoire a selection from the orchestral concertos of the recently rediscovered Artemio Motta, suitably adapted to the needs of our ensemble.

As a bonus, I am attaching a Sinfonia by G.B. Bononcini, in which the recorders might play a more prominent role (instead of the original baroque clarins). We will make many decisions based on what sounds best with our experimental instrumentation, so we certainly will not perform everything.

The pitch standard will be A=415 Hz, but modern instruments may be used if they can adapt to this tuning (a semitone lower). And, as usual, flautists and viol players in particular can look forward to an adventurous search for suitable parts—and instruments they may be able to join.
