HISTORY

International Summer School of Early Music (ISSEM) has taken place in Valtice (Czech Republic, South Moravia) since 1989. The organizer is the Early Music Society (CR), in co-operation with the Town of Valtice and the Valtice Castle (Zámek Valtice). ISSEM is the most extensive interpretation course of early music with the longest tradition and a worldwide reputation, held in the CR. It is open to both professionals and amateurs.

A week full of hard work with highly respected musicians from different countries and, at the same time, an opportunity to enjoy an active holiday-week. The main classes take place in the mornings from 9:00 till 12:30 a.m. After lunch, the course-members can choose orchestral or choral classes, listen or participate in other special seminars, or learn historical dances.

The lecturers and guest musicians perform each evening in the Spanish Stables of the Castle in the church or at other places. The last two evenings are dedicated to students’ concerts and children’s performances. Informal and joyful late-night folk dancing has become a popular part of the program over the years.

The town Valtice itself and its surrounding countryside offer serene walks, lots of landmarks as well as swimming in the lakes and cycling (cheap bicycle rentals are available). The district is famous for its vineyards and wine cellars. The Valtice-Lednice region is UNESCO Heritage listed since 1996.
